Functional Materials Design
The Applied Chemistry program’s Functional Materials Design course offers opportunities for study and research that invite students to develop new and useful functional substances and materials by imitating or applying the functions and structures of functional molecules in the body. Students assess the functions of the body at the molecular level from the perspective of chemistry, elucidate the structure and functional mechanisms of biomolecules, and put their findings to use. In addition, they develop measurement technologies to facilitate biomolecular science. Through the course’s educational and research program, they learn how to use chemistry and engineering to create new functional substances based on the body’s mechanisms.
In recent years, universities have been called upon to offer students an education that meets the needs of the current era. However, scholarship, which provides the basis of education, has a universal and unchanging element even as it evolves with the times. The discipline of functional substances has undergone significant development during the last century. Students in the Functional Materials Design course explore the breadth and depth of this field through specialized courses that start during the second semester of their second year, developing fundamental skills that will play a useful role in the society of the future during their four years of undergraduate study. The course also works to offer cross-disciplinary study in collaboration with the other three courses (Polymeric Materials Design, Materials Chemistry Design, and Molecular Chemistry Design).
The course offers the following research opportunities exploring the theme of the diversity of functional substances:
- Research related to the application of polypeptide nano-aggregates to medical engineering and to antigen delivery systems that use peptide nano-aggregates
- Research into the functional use of biomolecules to build a health-oriented society
- Development of disease diagnostic methods: Development of disease treatment molecules and diagnostic systems that target RNA
- Rubber and elastomer science: Research into natural rubber and the vulcanization and reinforcement of rubber
- Biochemical engineering: Research into the production of functional substances by microorganisms, the development of environmentally friendly bio-processes, and the isolation, refinement, and functional enhancement of biopharmaceuticals
- Research into correlations between the structure and function of bio-related materials using magnetic resonance spectroscopy
- Biological research into bioluminescence and fluorescence visualization of intracellular and intercellular information and into the structure of clinical-related proteins and environmental proteins
- Electrochemistry of energy conversion reactions in artificial biomembranes and its application to ion distribution in membranes and at boundaries and to electrochemical analytical methods
